The Problem

Most people in Myanmar are involved in the agriculture sector. Producing good quality agricultural products which can be successfully sold locally and globally are the keys to boosting Myanmar's agricultural sector.

Myanmar’s Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) initiative, led by the Department of Agriculture, shares the knowledge of GAP among farmers in Myanmar and helps farmers become GAP-certified. However, there is a need to educate farmers nationwide and it is a challenge for the Department of Agriculture to be able to expand the certification process.

How can Myanmar’s GAP be promoted among farmers quickly with low cost and optimizing human resources? How can this process be made to work faster and more efficiently?

Our Unique Solution

The Myanmar GAP Chatbot Platform provides a wide range of agricultural practices to farmers conveniently through a Facebook Messenger Chatbot. Additionally, farmers can apply for GAP certification, keep daily records required by the GAP certification process, ask questions about agriculture, learn about how to do agribusiness, all by just having a smartphone and internet. The chatbot is available for farmers at any time.

The Department of Agriculture, which operates Myanmar GAP, will access and manage farmers’ information through the website dashboard. Farmers’ information is accessed by geography and crops. Detailed farmer’s information is viewed and GAP certificates issued. Also, DOA can give individualized attention to the conditions of each farmer and manage Q&A sessions. Therefore, the Myanmar GAP Platform links farmers and the Department of Agriculture in real-time, supporting the faster and more effective implementation of Myanmar GAP.

The Results

Within 3 months of Myanmar GAP Chatbot going live, the Department of Agriculture was able to see a significant growth in the numbers of GAP certificate applications. DOA investigators who travel to farms to assess the conditions of the crops, soil, and land can file their reports electronically, which saves a significant amount of time and is more accurate.

I grew up learning farming from my family but didn't really know about good agricultural practices. Once I was introduced to Myanmar GAP Chatbot, I learned a lot about effective and ethical farming. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, I was unable to apply for a GAP certification in person at my local township office. However, thanks to Myanmar GAP Chatbot, I can easily apply for a GAP certification with just my smartphone and internet.
